New data from The Insolvency Service shows that 1 in 190 companies in England and Wales on the Companies House effective register (at a rate of 52.5 per 10,000 companies) entered insolvency between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2025. This was a decrease from the 56.6 per 10,000 companies that entered insolvency in the 12 months ending 31 July 2024. Although company insolvency volumes over the past two years were at the highest levels seen since the 2008/09 recession, the number of companies on the Companies House register has increased over time. Therefore, recent insolvency rates have remained much lower than the peak rate of 113.1 insolvencies per 10,000 companies on the effective register during the 2008/09 recession.
